Society and the Environment- Paul Hawkin at Bioneers

It's hard to create any lasting change without a comprehensive context for your life. If you're simply out to save yourself, save your family, save the planet, save anything really, you'll find that the fundamental space from which you are working precludes you from supporting transformation.

Paul Hawkin might be the most visionary creator of context alive. Coupled with a credibility with the sustainable economy sector, the environmental integrity movement, and the social justice movenement, Paul has integrated a place to stand in the world that is uniquely powerful in its capacity to transcend, yet include all human structures of belief, comsology, and culture. At the Bioneers conference this past Sunday he shared with us this peice of biology: You have about 1 quadrillion cells in your body (10, followed by 15 zeros), 9 trillion of which are not human! 9 trillion tiny little beings in your body, none of which share a human genetic make-up, and yet are completely integral to the functioning of our body's life support systems. But what do these cells do all day long? At any given moment, you have 1 septillion functions occuring inside of your body (10 to the 24, roughly the number of stars in the universe). Can you feel it? Can you feel the 1 septillion expressions of movement living inside of you every moment?

Creating the conditions that are conducive to sustaining life is the only viable economy man can reasonably espouse. There is no need to model ourselves after nature, Spencer Beebe says; there is no other model!
